the ones that, living in great distress, had
faced destiny with dignity. Towards the
dawn of his life, he had become a living leg‑
end. Retired to the silence of the park and
castle at Bucov, he was celebrating „the tri‑
umph of the defeated”, as somebody said.
As well as his life full of adversities, the
posterity of C. Stere benefitted of an undu‑
tiful fate. His role in politics was persistent‑
ly insisted upon, only from a „socialist” per‑
spective, as the communist state needed to
be pleased. Otherwise, „the triple stigma
that C. Stere carried in the view of the ide‑
ologists of the regime installed in 1945
delayed his «recovery» very much. Only
towards the end of the 70’s, Z. Ornea man‑
aged to publish a first volume called Scrieri
which, as the headnote shows, was not an
edition of critic, implicitly one of «complete
works», but an «anthological» one, «aspir‑
ing to be representative» and only selecting
«writings published in 1893 (one year after
his debut) up until around 1913»”[15].
Even from his publishing debut, his tri‑
umphs were not avoided by resentful atti‑
tudes, and some conclusions ought to be
drawn. Allowing the facts to speak for
themselves, from a journalistic point of
view, the year 1894 was a very productive
one for C. Stere. If, in 1893, his collabora‑
tions were only limited to 5 interventions
(in „Adevărul”, „Evenimentul”, „Munca” and
Evenimentul literar”), the next year he
counted up to 42 collaborations, out of
which 32 were at „Evenimentul literar”, 7 of
them were at „Munca” and one in each at
Adevărul”, „Naţionalul” and „Evenimentul”.
The articles written under various pseu‑
donyms by C. Stere have drawn the atten‑
tion of the readers and have also started
comments from the brethren, taking stances
as pro or anti in the public space. A list of
publications that have been polemically
drawn onto the ideas launched by C. Stere
comprises „Adevărul”, „Constituţionalul”,
Ecoul Moldovei”, „Epoca”, „Era nouă”,
Familia”, „Literatura şi ştiinţa”, „Lumina”,
Lupta”, „Munca”, „Naţionalul”, „Revista
nouă”, „Românul”, „Ţara”, „Voinţa naţională”.
The nearly weekly exercise of writing in
a magasine leaves a mark on his personali‑
ty, highlighting his qualities as a publicist
and, most important, as a polemist. Among
the attributes shown in his writings from
the 17 texts published in less than three
months, the most prominent are the coher‑
ence of speech, when the author does not
turn into a pamphleteer, obviously. On
more than a single occasion, the articles
started from a remark valued as a sentence.
There are praises that can offend you more
than an insult”, he states somewhere. „I
bow to the wisdom of our people [who
understood] that nothing can be more
upsetting than «chewing the rag»”, he says
elsewhere. „When you are careless enough
to squash a bedbug with your finger, it
stinks...”, he adds, someplace else. In anoth‑
er article, he refers to the „storm [started] in
a glass of water”. Without mentioning more
details, we conclude that the publicist
beginnings of C. Stere have started under
very good auspices. The author is convinc‑
ing through the diction of his ideas, through
clarity, through penetrating style variety,
through an executory logic filled with argu‑
ments and spiced up with acid irony, his
writing featuring the mark of his personali‑
ty. It constitutes an ”index” that is highly
necessary to the ones dealing with identify‑
ing the numerous pseudonyms he used. All
these qualities are worth mentioning, yet
there is another one that we should also
consider, and that is the courage of his opin‑
ions and beliefs, which had risked to
become a major flaw around his debut, as it
was so high that it was similar to a level of
unconsciousness, taking into consideration
the risks generated by his own writings.
Regarding the pseudonyms that he used
[16] during his prodigious publishing activi‑
ty, more and more surprises are expected.
Certain short texts have not been signed
deliberately, but many others lie hidden
under other names. To Zigu Ornea, but
mostly to Victor Durnea, we owe the eluci‑
dation of the ”paternity” of some articles and
authenticating them as belonging to C. Stere.
Among the pseudonyms he used, the most
common is C. Şercăleanu.[17]. In publishing,
C. Stere starts identifying as himself in 1906,
the year when his real name appears as man‑
