Halton Hills Fire Protection and
Prevention Services firefighters were
busy Boxing Day with two kitchen fires
in Georgetown that resulted in about
$20,000 in total damage.
No one was injured in either blaze.
The first kitchen fire call came in at
about 11:50 a.m. on Nixon Cr.
The homeowners had been using
their one-year-old self-cleaning oven,
however, instead of the heat being con-
tained to the oven, flames erupted from
the rear vent system, door seams and
spread to the nearby countertop and
cupboards.
Firefighters extinguished the flames
with dry chemical extinguisher and dis-
connected power to the stove.
The homeowner had hand-cleaned
the oven before turning it on, said
David Ford, Captain-Public Education
with Halton Hills Fire Protection and
Prevention Services.
The second call was at approximately
12:45 p.m. at a Berton Blvd. home.
A neighbour called the fire depart-
ment after hearing the smoke alarm in
the house.
When firefighters arrived they saw,
through a window, flames coming from
the countertop and spreading to the
underside of the cupboards.
Firefighters forced open the front
door and quickly put out the blaze.
The cause was an electrical malfunc-
tion of a toaster.
Ford said the toaster is suspected to
be the Black and Decker model ST2000
that is currently being recalled because
it poses a fire hazard.
Damage was contained to the coun-
tertop, wall/backsplash, under side of
the cupboards and there was also smoke
damage to the main level.
“Had it not been for the homeowner
being home or an alert and concerned
neighbour, both homes would have
been severely damaged. Two families
would have been living the worst
Christmas of their lives with the loss of
their home, personal effects, gifts and
the shelter of their home,” said Ford.
